So here’s what happened:
I approached last week with a bit of trepidation. Three weeks down, 4 songs written so far. I woke up Monday morning of this week and thought, “How did I manage to write 4 songs? What if I’m all tapped out? How in the world am I going to write anything good this week?”
Still, I “showed up at the page,” as Julia Cameron puts it, which means that I was just faithful to show up and write something, and trust that God would provide the inspiration. Monday morning I wrote utter drabble. That afternoon, I sat down with my guitar and toyed around with some (crappy) lyrics I’d written. Got frustrated. Took a walk.
Then, I sat down again about an hour later, picked up my guitar, and the bones of this song began to piece themselves together. I was shocked. It wasn’t like anything I’d ever written before.
Later that night, as I was doing dishes, the rest of the melody just sort of came to me – so forcefully, in fact, that I think I said, “Oh, CRAP!” as I was hurriedly drying off my hands so that I could grab my iPhone and get the melody into the voice recorder app. I’ve never experienced a burst of inspiration that was so insistent upon making itself known.
Tuesday, I finished up the lyrics, and then recorded a quick demo in Garageband just to have it recorded. When we played back the recording, David said, “That song doesn’t need anything else, and you’re not going to get a better vocal take than that!”
So, when I started to think about the video for this song, I thought it would be cool to do something a little different this week. I used the demo recording, some lo-fi video I’d recorded at the park this week, and put it all together to make a “music video.” It was a great deal of fun to be able to combine my two favorite creative outlets – music and video editing – especially for a song that feels so special.
Anyway, have a listen (and a look)! Thanks for letting me play!
